What Do YOU Think?

by Ahmad Goheer Email

This one is for the regular visitors of this blog ... and well if you are a newbie, your comments are welcome too and would certainly be appreciated!

If there was to be a comprehensive website on Pakistan Cricket, what would you like to see in it?

We know that such a website is missing today on the net, but if there were to be one coming up ... what sections should it have? What features, what tools etc. etc.?

Share your 'wish list' with us and you might get lucky (sooner than you think).

A Fan's View ... A Different Angle!

by Abdullah Ahmed Email

IPL has changed the face of modern cricket for good. Today, it is considered as one of the most successful domestic cricket tournament in the game’s history with all-star international cricketers, Bollywood celebrities, Political leaders, scantily-clad ‘foreign’ cheer girls, cricket-crazy fans, pumped-up local players and on top of all this the mega money-spinning commercial factor of the game.

What’s Cooking?

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Over the past couple of days, we have picked up some chatter from ‘friends’ inside the PCB and a few stories from other ‘reliable sources’ close to the individual players.

Major shakeup seems to be in the works ...

This is what has been confirmed so far and is already out in the news:

  • Mohsin Khan has been appointed the new chief selector.
  • Waqar Younus accepts the offer to be the next national coach.
  • Ijaz Ahmed, the national U19 coach, is now the fielding coach.

Congratulations - Little Master!

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Sachin Tendulkar, just minutes ago, became the first cricketer to make a double century in the ODIs. He achieved this unique feat while playing against South Africa at Gwalior today and also helped India reach a total of 401.

Look at the overall batting records in any format ... and perhaps the best man deservingly reached an outstanding milestone in the history of cricket.

CONGRATULATIONS ... from all of Pakistan!

The Top Five ...

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Yup, wasn’t planning to go last night (first T20 against England), knew this would happen ... but last minute a friend called with spare tickets from a sponsor so of course I was there ...

We won five in a row to win the World T20 and since then had not lost a single game of the format, till of course the Aussie tour ... and now we just lost the second one in a row. Let’s not all blame our team once again and focus on the good that came out of it. Here are the top five positives from the last night ...

Autopsy Report : Patient Died Having No Spine!

by Azeem Akhtar with Amer Siddiqui Email

Ever since 1971, when General Niazi surrendered 73,000 Pakistani troops to India in what was then known as East Pakistan, we seemed to have developed a liking for throwing the towel in as shown in the test match concluded yesterday. It seems that Pakistani suicide missions do not just happen in crowded Karachi markets or during Aashura processions, they also took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia. Pakistan have been called unpredictable, however, that epithet is too kind. We are predictable ... predictably bad!

A Brand New Day!

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Did anyone watch or follow the first day of the second Test at SCG?
Yup, that one ... and we didn’t even have the services of Mohammad Aamer today!

But then our bowlers have almost always performed for us (even with the bat at times) ... it’s the batsmen that come out with the inexplicable (and I don't mean in a good way).

Out of the Frying Pan, into the Fire!

by Ahmad Goheer Email

In good old days, a New Zealand tour faced with their injury hit depleted side would have been a walk in the park ... but alas, we managed to make a full meal of this one. The biggest culprit was of course the batting once again but add some cold feet (and hands), literally, to the recipe as well. If the 1-1 draw in the Test series was the best we could manage (and are somehow happy about as well) ... get ready for an absolute mauling next.

The Final Day

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Tomorrow is the final day of the final test, and basically the final day of the series which started in Abu Dhabi some six weeks ago. In the first leg, Pakistan lost that third ODI (and with that the ODI series) in a manner I still am speechless about. But the one positive that did come out of that was Younis Khan leaving the team. Well it was only half-positive as our bureaucracy in PCB failed to capitalize on that ... where Afridi should have been given the ODI captaincy (after a 100% record so far in the T20s under him), they have appointed Yousuf instead and where Younis should have been better managed through his break period and brought back in the Test side announced for Australia, they have well forgotten him altogether and filled the Test team with whoever brought a ‘parchi’ with him.

The First Test - Warming Up

by Ahmad Goheer Email

First of all, a very happy Eid Mubarak to all!

The first test between Pakistan and New Zealand is currently being played at the University Oval in Dunedin. It’s the end of Day 4 ... and things down under have warmed up nicely. Tomorrow morning Pakistan needs to get rid of the last two of the Kiwis as soon as possible and then bat out the day to chase the 250-260 odd runs (the current lead being 244 at close today). Weather too could come into play and it might not be the full day that our batsmen would get.

So what is the greatest Pakistan playing 11 ever?

Thursday, 12 November 2009 was the date for the first T20 between Pakistan and New Zealand. Great plans had been made to watch the game live with a group of 30 plus friends at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Sadly, it wasn’t to be for me. Unfortunately due to a last minute crisis at work I was unable to attend the match. Needless to say, I was seriously pissed off! I mean come on ... I was so looking forward to this.

When you lie for too long, you start believing in your own cooked stories. I think this is what’s gone wrong with the Indian media and this particular ad is a prime example.

A Tale of Two Tee Twen Tees

by Ahmad Goheer with Amer Siddiqui Email

So New Zealand took away the ODIs 2-1 after that Aamir/Ajmal thriller in Abu Dhabi, but Pakistan came back very strongly in Dubai and swept the T20s 2-0 ...

These two T20 wins put Pakistan further apart from the rest with our win/loss ratio now standing at a whopping 4.20. To put things in perspective, everyone else is hovering only between 0.75 and 1.75. Current standings are, South Africa (which is second to us in overall T20 figures) is at 1.77. Then Sri Lanka at 1.55, India 1.28, West Indies 1.00, Australia 0.91 and finally both England and New Zealand are at 0.75. Furthermore, we have kept our 100% record against the Kiwis, now at 4 wins out of the 4 played.

After a wonderful all-round performance in the first ODI against New Zealand, we have no one but ourselves to blame for a total turn-around of fortunes. Where New Zealand have found form in all departments and they are a team known for holding on to their good fortunes, Pakistan on the other hand can only be trusted for such a turn-around from good to bad and not the other way around. Come Monday, I really hope they learn from last night and do better in the upcoming finale.

Open Letter to Imran Farhat

by Farooq Nomani Email

Dear Imran Farhat,

So, you’re back. I’d tell you it’s good to see you again, but it’s not. You must be over the moon, what with being picked for all three formats. Why, you must think you’re a regular Kevin Pietersen, eh?

Unfortunately, Imran, you’re not. You may be a year or so older. You may be a day or so wiser. But underneath all that flash, beneath all the ICL bravado, you’re the same guy who’s going to perpetuate our opening problem. You’re the batsman who miscues an ambitious pull shot. You’re the player who attempts a cross-batted hoick across the line of the ball for inexplicable reasons. And you’re the guy who helps perfect the opposing side’s slip-catching skills.

All this leads me to conclude that you’re a wonderful husband.

The Revenge Series (Opening Shortly)

by Ahmad Goheer Email

After losing the Champions Trophy Semi Final to New Zealand, which we shouldn’t have (given our track record against them as well as the strengths of two teams that day), but anyway ... time for revenge has come too soon. You can’t really make up for a loss at an ICC Major, but this surely is the start of a no. of bilateral series to come that Pakistan hasn’t been playing in a while, except of course a couple of times against Sri Lanka. Perhaps it’s also time to sort out those sliding Test and ODI rankings.

Zoar ka Khel - Part 1

by Ahmad Goheer Email

I was flying back from Almaty earlier this week when somewhere along the way the plane hit a rough weather pocket. The flight suddenly went from a notable calm to unbelievably turbulent. Wait, before I go any further, there were no problems as such, it was probably a rough weather system and in the end we landed safely at Abu Dhabi.

But somewhere during that sudden turbulence ... while pressing some buttons, one of the pilots probably switched the intercom on. What I heard for the next two - very very long - minutes was very very disturbing. Not because ‘what’ the pilots were saying but because I couldn’t understand a single word they said. It was all Russian.

Only Champions. Only the Best. *

That’s the tagline for the Champions League kicking off in Bangalore tonight. I am however starting to wish their people had put an asterisk on all their marketing.

Pakistan v New Zealand Semi Final

They think it’s all over ... It is now as far as Pakistan’s contribution and participation in the Champions Trophy is concerned (and it still ends amongst the top four).

This was lined up as being a one sided affair. New Zealand plagued by injury was pretty much written off and I also think Pakistan went into the game with an element of over confidence as if it was a walk in the park. How wrong were they proved?

Champions Trophy 2009 | The Semi Finals

by Ahmad Goheer with Amer Siddiqui Email

So far this Champions Trophy has proven to be most exciting occurrence of this particular ICC tournament ever, courtesy of its short (and cut-throat) format and some exciting pitches. The three pre-tournament suspected semi-finalists (South Africa, Sri Lanka and India), two of which were also hot favourites for the trophy itself (and are currently ranked 1 and 2 in ODI as well), are all already out of the tournament.

Champions Trophy | Pakistan v Australia - 30 Sept 2009

by Ahmad Goheer Email

The Build Up

Pakistan is going to win this game. Period. I mean, they’ve got to ... after all, over a billion Indians are praying for us rather desperately.

The washout of India v Australia game today has assured Pakistan a semi-final spot (although, the way Australia was going, it would have happened anyway). The only thing rain did was perhaps gave India an excuse to get out of the humiliation they were about to face as Australia was on its way to smash them well past 300 which, under lights with overcast conditions and a batsman short, India was never going to be able to chase against a potent Australian attack which certainly doesn’t need enhancing their testosterone levels.

The Postmortem : We came, we conquered!

by Amer Siddiqui Email

Firstly, congratulations to all the Pakistani fans out there on an exceptionally professional performance put on by our team yesterday. It had been due for quite some time now, if we are to look at major ICC tournaments on a standalone basis, and indeed it was done in quite some style.

Yesterday’s match once again brought the best out of the one day game and has given all the critics of the ODI format (including me) something to think about. It was like a roller coaster ride swinging from one side to another. An excellent start for Pakistan with Younis winning the toss on a good batting track and with Akmal & Nazir giving the boys in green a decent launch pad, although Nazir needs to work on his shot selection specially when he has already hit a couple of boundaries in the same over.

The Build Up

It’s neither the Roger Federer up against Rafael Nadal on the tennis court, nor the Tiger teeing-off with Mickelson on a tournament Sunday tied at top of the leaderboard. No, it’s not an Ashes decider and not even Liverpool taking on Man United in a final. All of these may qualify to be one of the fiercest of sports battles today, but none comes even close to an India v Pakistan clash on the cricket field.

Champions Trophy | Pakistan v West Indies - 23 Sept 2009

The Build Up

Here comes the Champions Trophy ... The host this time around is South Africa. Well, on paper the host (and still earning the associated fee) is Pakistan, but that is another story for another time; haven’t we actually heard it too many times already?

Pakistan starts its campaign against West Indies this Wednesday. Before we get to the actual match preview (narrowing which down is proving to be a very hard task), let’s compare Pakistan with South Africa first. Although Pakistan and South Africa are in separate groups and won’t face each other unless in the Finals stage, it still is a good comparison to set the tone of the tournament ... Don’t worry, you’ll see in a minute where we are going with this Pak v SA contrast in a Pak v WI preview ...

ICC Champions Trophy 2009 | Preview - Part II

by Ahmad Goheer Email

This is the continuation from the previous post ...
ICC Champions Trophy 2009 | Preview - Part I

Champions Trophy was the second most prestigious cricket tournament after the World Cup ... at least, until a couple of years ago when ICC introduced the World T20. Still a major tournament in the ICC line up, it was started as the ICC Knock Out Tournament back in 1998 and has been held every two years since. In 2002 after the two Knock Out Tournaments, it was rebranded as the Champions Trophy. It has gone from an eight team competition to twelve to ten to eight again. It has also been tried in different flavours of straight knock-out to round-robin to various other formats. The Champions Trophy 2009 will be held in South Africa later this month (which originally was to be played in 2008 and to be hosted by Pakistan but was postponed due to security fears).

ICC Champions Trophy 2009 | Preview - Part I

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Only the top eight ODI teams will be competing in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa next month. For those who don't know, there are ten Test playing nations (who are also the full members of the ICC) and thus automatically have the permanent ODI playing status. Then there are others (likes of Netherlands, Ireland and even Afghanistan now) with temporary ODI status. This changes from time to time depending on how these teams perform at the Associate level ... so for now, let’s leave them out of this debate.

Extreme Aggressor

The very first episode of my favourite TV show Criminal Minds was called "Extreme Aggressor". The show follows the adventures of a team of profilers from the FBI’s Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) based at Quantico, Virginia (fictional, of course). Unlike other TV crime dramas, the show focuses on profiling the criminal rather than the crime itself. Now when I sat down to profile the Pakistan’s new T20 skipper ahead of his first game as captain, I just couldn’t come up with any other headline for this post. Cutting straight to it, here is the player in focus today:

The Winning Formula!

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Ever since kindergarten, I have been good with only one thing ... my maths. I remember my scores going from a 10/10, to 20/20 to a 100/100 all the way through to high school. So a 98/100 in my final tenth grade exam was a huge (self) disappointment. Now I am no John Nash, however numbers do circle around in my head whenever the opportunity arises.

One such light bulb went on in my head when, after Pakistan lost a game, a friend once jokingly said, “yeh to patta hi tha, iss sey to sallay opposition pey paisay hi laga diyay hotay, kemm az kemm kuch khushi to hoye hoti” (Already knew this’d happen, so might as well have put some money on the opposition, atleast would’ve won some money).

A lot has been written about the behaviour of the sub-continental fans after losing a cricket match. They go out and burn tires on the streets, burn the cricketers’ posters, burn their effigies, burn whatever they can find to burn really. In bigger tournaments like World Cups, they attack the players’ houses, break their windows and in some cases even bring down their walls. Well, when the same team wins the very next match, the same extremist fans go back and re-build that wall too.

The yesterday’s article by Ahmad reminded me of an interesting incident from my time ...

It was way back the 1960-61 tour of India, Pakistan played the last test in New Delhi. Remember, in those days the host country had the right to appoint both umpires and there were no third umpires.

Our bowlers are the greatest ...

by Ahmad Goheer Email

I mean they have got to be ... they give us more hope than our batsmen do, and not just with the ball in their hand. Here’s another reason why we have always loved our bowlers more ...

Imran Khan came in as a bowler, played half his career as a pure fast bowler and then transformed himself into one of the greatest all-rounders of the game. He was worth a place in any team for his batting alone. In fact he got better and better with the bat and in the last ten years of his career he played 51 Tests with a magnificent batting average of 50 plus.

Over the years, the growth we have witnessed in this group has not only been in terms of a sheer number but in the enthusiasm levels as well. So much so that now I receive gifts with this reference on my birthdays. No, I don’t still celebrate my birthdays, but the projector we now take out every now and then and dismantle my living room for a Pakistani game was in fact a birthday present ... a well thought out one at that, for these very occasions where we all turn up in Green.

by Ahmad Goheer Email

Everybody talks about Pakistan cricket team needing new attitude ... the need to change their mindset. We have been listening to this very phrase for way too long now, but what does this really mean?

The buck stops with the captain – he is the one who leads, he is the most influential on the players, he is the one who can alter the course of the game, he is the decision maker out there in the field. He is not reading this blog or any other newspaper or talking to any experts sitting in the commentary boxes when he is out there in the field so the utmost important thing for any team is that their captain, the leader has the right mindset.
